Product Description

One of Harrisville's core yarns, Shetland has been a versatile workhorse for our customers for years. This yarn is not made from Shetland Wool; Shetland refers to the size and style of the yarn and not the fiber origin. The wool is a blend of an Australian fine wool and a hearty New Zealand wool that gives the yarn its luster.

Harrisville Shetland is spun more tightly on the spinning frames than other yarns (more turns per inch), so it is highly durable and will wear better and better every year. Don’t let the rustic feel fool you - it will "full" and soften over time and will become a favorite long-wearing sweater or accessory.

Please note that this yarn is available to view and purchase ONLINE ONLY, for shipping or in-store pickup. All sales are final on discounted yarns.

Harrisville Designs has been spinning 100% Virgin Wool Yarn in Harrisville, New Hampshire for over 40 years. As one of a handful of woolen mills left in the U.S., Harrisville's textile tradition is rich and dates back to 1794 when the first of several mills was built across the Nubanusit River to harness the water-power necessary for carding fleeces brought down to the village from local hilltop farms. The village of Harrisville was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977. It is recognized as the only 18th century textile village in America that survives in its original form.

You can see these beautiful buildings and processes in the YouTube videos Harrisville Designs - Who We Are and Harrisville Designs - A Day in the Life of an American Woolen Mill.
