Product Description

Navia Tradition is a descendent of the old-style yarns used in the Faroe Islands for knitting 'skipstroyggjur' or boatman's jerseys. In Faroese, the yarn is called "Samfingið" meaning 'unsorted,' i.e. the coarser fibres are not plucked out. This results in a rustic yarn, full of character, that is especially suitable for rugged jumpers and jackets. It has a similar feel to Icelantic LopiPrior to 2018 Tradition was made with 80% Faroese wool and 20% English lambswool to give a softer feel, but it is now produced exclusively with wool from the Faroe Islands.

This wool is non-superwash, thus retaining the fragrant and water-resistant lanolin and the anti-microbial properties and natural shape-memory of the fibre. Garments made from this yarn will not require washing except for spills and before seasonal storage; a simple airing-out will refresh it between wearings.

Urban Yarns carries all of the Navia pattern books that have English translations. We are listing them on our web store right this moment - watch this space for links! This is a relatively new yarn so there are currently few English digital pattern PDFs available on Ravelry that specifically call for Navia Tradition, but it can be substituted directly in patterns calling for Istex Alaffosslopi (as long as you still do a gauge swatch!)

Kelbourne Woolens is the North American distributor of Navia Yarns, and they will be hosting a knitalong for the pattern shown above, Troyggja Við Mynstur (Sweater with Round Pattern) from Navia Book 25! This book is otherwise not translated into English, but Kelbourne Woolens has translated this one pattern and has released it as a free-to-download PDF on Ravelry. The knitalong will run Nov. 16, 2018 through January 14, 2019 so join in anytime! More info on Kelbourne Woolens' Instagram and blog.
